I found out earlier in the week that it's currently Banned Books Week in the States, so even though I'm not technically
in the States, I thought I'd participate. Today is the last day actually, and I'm proud to say that since Sunday I've gone through... at
least ten of them. Obviously it's impossible to read one hundred of the
most commonly challenged and banned books in the States in just a week, especially with my own course work on top of it, but I do think for the short amount of time I had I put a sizable dent in them. I think I'll keep reading! Just, you know, because I
can.
I
also took on the task of specifically targeting some books that were banned here in the U.K, if not indefinitely then for a short time, for a bit of light reading as well. I highly recommend
The Well of Loneliness by Radclyffe Hall! It was banned here in 1928 for its blatant lesbian themes, though thankfully it was republished in 1949. Smashing good story,
1984 by George Orwell is one of my favorites as well. While I'm yakking, I'll go ahead and recommend
Ulysses by James Joyce for anyone that enjoys Greek themes of the more ancient variety, it was banned during the 1930's.
Rights of Man by Thomas Paine is a fairly interesting read. It was banned in the U.K and the author charged with treason for supporting the French Revolution. Well, I only have one thing to say about that. Viva La Revolucion! Intolerant, book banning tossers.
